[VintageLambo] Re: Targa Top for Espada

Body of Message

My take on all this is that if the mods are done "like the factory would have" I"m for it.What that means to me, is first off that it"s safe.(ok, stop the giggling!)If you look at the 400GT AC bracket, that"s what I mean. That thing is bullet proof.Or changing the rear suspension from 350GT to 400GT2+2 configuration. It"s a solid job, well-engineered. Also, that cosmetic mods be "like the factory would do it."It"ll be really easy to knock that statement, but face it -- there are real designers at the factory that understand keeping the mod faithful to the concept of the car. And I"m not talking about x-ref parts here, like a different brake booster, I"m talking about major changes, like making a targa Miura. So, if you have the "chops" of a factory engineer or designer, I say do it and end up with a neat "one-off."If not, I"d advise finding somebody that does to do the work for you. Of course, if you"re concerned about resale value, or historical "correctness" -- that"s going to suffer because of it. But it really is your car and you can do what you want with it.Like the old saying goes..."It"s my painting, I can eat it if I want." I"ve done a couple of "no-no" mods on my 400GT 2+2.Putting in the oval headlights, and changing the look of the front "bumper smile." Frankly, I think I"ve improved the look of the car, but also have diminished the resale value.Fortunatley, I don"t care about the resale value as I plan to keep the car as long as possible -- I did the mods to please me.And, as Doc points out, if you keep the old parts you can always go back if you want.I have the old headlights, and it"s easy to scrape the bondo off if I want to restore the bumper smile. I guess my point is that it doesn"t have to be a "butcher job."Mods can be done pleasingly and successfully. All depends on what you want to do with the car. Cheers, Fred ! .
